SHE COAXES THE HUMAN SPIRIT

WHO IS SHE?
She is MD, therapist, mother but in the pre-scientific era she would have been the Hermit in her cave or the Wise Woman in front of the fire. Today the fire into which she gazes is a medical records computer screen. She is the Oracle who consults her runes, the bones, the stars, the history, the lab results, her notes and her heart. She turns her Prophetic Gaze inward on herself and recalls the patient's rattling chest, the general strength or weakness, fever, and clammy touch...? She sees each prior check-up and looks into her mind's eye and sees us, her patients, in detail. She fields a call from her daughter and discusses their dinner plans. Then, she adjusts herself inwardly and comes to the exam room.

I AM YOUR HANDS

WHO AM I?
I am your hands. At play. At work. Folded. Cupped. Applauding. Busy. Patting. Caressing. Touching. Tenderly exploring. Smacking. Crushing. Tickling. Pushing. Ges-tur-ing! Thumbing. Picking. Applauding. Fondling. Entwining. Knitting. Sewing. Playing an instrument. Smoothing. Soothing. Questioning, why? Why!? Saying stay! Sit. Come. Fists punching. Slapping! Loading. Saluting. Waving. Preserving. Defending. Gripping. Clutching. Pointing. Fingering! Snapping, ah ha! That’s it! Plucking. Buttoning. Zipping. Hitchhiking. Texting. Dialing. Agile, and extraordinary. Eyes of the soul. Reverent. Knitting a veil for the Queen of Heaven. Making the “Sign of the Cross”.  Flipping off an aggressor. Covering our mouth in surprise! The point of contact for formative forces. Forces of Science, Music, Craft, the Arts, Mechanics, Technology, and Love. The Hands are all about Love. Touching and being touched.

MIDNIGHT SHIFT

WHO AM I?
I work the “Midnight Shift” from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. or some other ungodly hours. I may work the dimly lit warehouse, the brightly lit manufacturing, the color balanced print shop, loading trucks, unloading trucks, sorting, boxing, feeding parts into the machine or whatever repetitive task is required to keep the shift work going in Cuaultitlan, Kathmandu, Sao Palo, Dusseldorf, Detroit or wherever. It’s pretty much the same repetitive, soul-numbing work. Or worse, it could be something like tele-marketing: cold-calling which 98% rejection which is hard not to take personally. Mostly to get through the shift I had to build a shell, wear a mask, mentally put on armor, or create a persona -- certainly split my inner life from my outer job. It’s called the “gap in the soul”.  It can happen with ANY job – even white collar jobs and service jobs. It becomes a real problem when the protective sheath gets too hard or fixed and is something you can’t escape from or get out of and you get stuck. It can happen. You can see it sometimes.

I AM THE BEING OF QUIET . . . AND YOU ARE? ANXIOUS? OVERWHELMED? NERVOUS?

WHO AM I?
Hi!  How you doin’?  I’m Quiet.  Remember me? Long time no see. You’ve been BUSY!  Me? Oh, hanging out. When was the last time we got together? Oh, go ahead, answer that. Yeah, I know, cell phones - what're ya gonna do? Man, you got a lot of demands on your time. Still married? How's the wife? Girlfriend? How many kids you got now? How many jobs you work? And the wife? Oh that’s okay, send the text. I’ll wait. Look at that! You got a big screen TV with over 200 channels. Man, that's GREAT. Loaded IPod. Kindel. You’re IMPORTANT! You got bills to pay. Lots of bills. So, how’s it going with that little issue you wanted to talk with me about? What'd you call it? "Nervous gut"?  You said you were feeling driven. Overwhelmed. Anxious. Couldn’t sleep. What was that you said about “aimless searching”. Forgetfulness? Oh, you go ahead and take that call it may be important – they’re all important. How to find inner strength?

THE SUBSTANCE OF LOVE

WHO AM I?
When I was growing up – maybe 3 years old - my family lived next door to an older, “widow woman” with a bushy head of salt and pepper hair, who wore thick glasses, chain-smoked and laughed a deep, rumbly laugh whom I called “Auntie Helen”.  She wasn’t really my Aunt but in those days all the women on the block of tiny houses in our wannabe prosperous neighborhood in San Antonio were my Aunts and all had full permission to act like my mother when my mother wasn’t around. Many times I would go to Auntie Helen’s house and the first thing she would ask is, “Have you eaten? Are you hungry?” and I would nearly always say, “No, I haven’t eaten and yes, I am hungry.” So, Auntie Helen would cackle and prepare my favorite: Uncle Ben’s “Instance” Rice with a big pat of butter.  I remember Auntie Helen used a white enamel pan to boil the water and my mother didn’t. I wondered if that was a magic pan that made the Instance rice taste better.  It wasn’t the rice that was special, it was what Auntie Helen put IN the rice – Love. Auntie Helen transformed the Instance rice into the Substance of Love.
