The Calendar of Virtues represents a year-round opportunity to practice Virtue Transitions while outer nature is going through analogous changes. Your inner practice will be reflected in the outer world which can strengthen your experience.
AUGUST 20 - SEPTEMBER 21 -
Courtesy becomes tactfulness of heart
By Jean W. YeagerIN NATURE:
September is perhaps the time that one begins to see geese flying overhead in formation, warming up for the autumn migration. Over the next few months, in many parts of the country, this site is a common one. This is a "tactic" by the geese to save energy during their long journeys. It requires that the geese maintain a certain distance from one another. It is a type of self-control in flight which enables another goose to maintain their place in the overall formation - and eases the physical demands of flight. One may say that it is a instinctual form of "courtesy" which is inbuilt into the geese and their flight patterns. This instinctual way of acting is something that is at the "heart" of being a goose or a good member of a "flock".
IN HUMAN NATURE:
One sees in dance performances and awareness between each of the individual performers regarding their specific place on the stage. In addition, one sees many interactions within organizations in which individuals follow a particular seating order, or put themselves into a standing or relationship with one another due to some inbuilt agreement. If one violates an individual's spatial needs and comes too close, one can expect a reaction of disapproval or hostility. Courtesy to one another is built up over time as a "tactic" to create or maintain a certain kind of relationship. "Tactfulness" for us is not terribly dissimilar to the tactics used by geese to save energy on long journeys. To be positive with one another generally saves us energy as well.
"Learning something by heart" happens with lots of repetition. Once you get to know someone and what "presses their buttons", you have learned their triggers by heart and can avoid them, be tactful, or be considerate.
